Día de Canarias in Playa Blanca & Yaiza!

A celebration rooted in Culture, Cuisine & Canarian Charm.

Every year, on the 30th of May, the Canary Islands come together to mark a moment in history and the formation of the Canary Islands’ autonomous government. Día de Canarias is a celebration of identity, a living, breathing expression of what it means to be Canarian. It is marked not by grand spectacle, but through culture, the familiar rhythm of timple strings, traditional games, and shared meals passed down through generations. The quiet pride of communities that have carried their heritage forward with grace.

In Yaiza and Playa Blanca, this day is not a performance for visitors, but an invitation: to pause, listen, taste, and step inside a way of life that has long drawn strength from the land, the sea, and each other. Over three days, village plazas, coastal promenades, and quiet corners are filled with the sound of folk music, the taste of time-honoured dishes, and the deep warmth of families and communities celebrating side by side. For those visiting Lanzarote, it’s a rare opportunity to experience authentic Canarian life, up close, and in rhythm with the island itself.

Three Days of Cultural Celebrations.

This year, the Municipality of Yaiza presents a three-day programme of events that honour both tradition and community, inviting everyone, young and old, to share in the spirit of local life.

Thursday, 29 May – Yaiza Village

In the heart of the countryside, the village of Yaiza opens the celebrations:

A children’s games workshop in the town square invites laughter and shared moments, bringing generations together in simple joy. At 7pm, the Casa de la Cultura hosts Loca Historia Maha—a lively theatre performance blending humour and island storytelling.

The day concludes at 9pm in Plaza de Los Remedios, where Acatife, one of Lanzarote’s most cherished folk groups, presents Ecos de Mujer—a musical tribute honouring the role of women in Canarian culture, performed beneath the stars.

Friday, 30 May – Yaiza Village

From 10.30am, Plaza de Los Remedios sets the scene for a day shaped by tradition and togetherness. The Municipal Band opens the festivities, followed by a Canarian ball workshop, and a performance by the Rubicón Folklore Group, weaving wind instruments and traditional dance into the heart of the square.

At midday, the official flag-raising ceremony gives way to a women’s Canarian wrestling match, supported by Club de Lucha Tinecheide, Lanzarote’s pioneering female wrestling team, a proud reflection of both heritage and progress.

From afternoon into evening, folk music, workshops, and dance animate the village streets. Families can enjoy camel rides from 6pm to 8pm, adding a playful note to a day filled with cultural richness and warm community spirit.

Saturday, 31 May – Playa Blanca & Yaiza

The final day begins in our wonderful home town of Playa Blanca, where the town beach hosts a wrestling exhibition at 11.30am by the Municipal School of Canarian Wrestling—a graceful, time-honoured sport performed where the tides meets the beautiful golden beaches.

At 12.30pm, celebrations move to Calle Limones, where Parranda La Aldaba fills the pedestrian street with music. All morning, the promenade is adorned with a striking display of five-metre lateen-sail boats, evoking the island’s maritime soul and one not to be missed!

As night falls, the focus returns inland to Yaiza, where at 8.30pm, the Casa de la Cultura presents Destiladera Lanzarote. Revelado 2025. A poignant film project by Tenique Cultural that breathes new life into historic home movies, capturing moments of everyday Canarian life.

Flavours of the Island: A Taste of Canarian Tradition

And few traditions are more lovingly preserved than the island’s food. To truly experience Día de Canarias is to taste it through recipes shaped by simplicity, heritage, and the rhythm of the seasons. From tender papas arrugadas with vibrant mojo sauces, to gofio escaldado, fresh grilled cherne, or bienmesabe for dessert, each dish tells a story of the land and those who work it.

In Playa Blanca, several restaurants honour this culinary legacy with care and pride. Casa Roja, set by the old harbour, is known for its fresh seafood and timeless setting; Flor de Sal, tucked away in Faro Park, offers elegant dishes with a creative take on traditional flavours; and El Argentino, while best known for its grilled meats, includes Canarian touches that reflect the island’s broader palate. . For something more relaxed and right by the sea, Chiringuito Tropical serves simple, flavourful local favourites just steps from the beach.
